Chapter 5: LIFE'S A MYSTERY

When they returned they could see Kadluk off to the east of the kitchen near his Komatik. His dogs lay in the snow where he had staked them upon his arrival.
“Here it is Kadluk,” Amy called as they approached him.
She held out the amulet but Kadluk only looked at it. He didn’t reach for it.
“Here, take it, see if it is the first amulet,” Amy said as she held the amulet out to Kadluk. As she observed him, she thought she detected a look of recognition in his eyes, but it was only a flash and then it was gone. “Do you recognize this amulet? Have you seen it before?” Amy wanted to know.
Kadluk took a quick step back as if he was recoiling from the amulet. “It matters not. I can see it from here - turn it in your hand so that I may see its carvings,” Kadluk replied sternly, keeping his distance.
“What’s the matter? Don’t you want to hold it?” wailed Amy as she rolled the amulet over in her hand.
“No,” replied Kadluk as he cautiously peered at the amulet.
“Why don’t you want to hold it, Kadluk?” asked Ty with concern in his voice.
