CHAPTER 2: THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

“Well, he did say it was a good question, and then he explained that they were there in case of a blizzard or whiteout and the ropes ended at a building. In an emergency, a person could follow along the ropes to the safety of a building,” Parker offered in explanation.
“I realize that now, Parker,” Amy remarked.
“That wasn’t the best part, Amy. The best part was when you said, ‘Aren’t a blizzard and a whiteout the same thing, Mr. Munro?’ And then he said, ‘No, dear, a blizzard is a snowstorm with winds blowing over fifty-six kilometres an hour with visibility less than four hundred metres for three hours or more. Sometimes a blizzard is described as a heavy snowstorm with high winds. A whiteout is a polar weather condition that occurs when the amount of light coming through a cloud equals the amount of light that is being reflected off the snow on the ground. When this happens, it is impossible to distinguish features on the ground because everything appears to be white with no depth,” Parker shouted.
“Go ahead and laugh, Mr. Smarty-pants. Not everyone has a photographic memory like you do,” Amy playfully shot back at her younger brother.
